In a number of recent studies, in which vitellogenin content of bees from
strong vs weak or sick colonies was compared, the stronger colonies
invariably exhibited higher Vg levels.
Recent research by Drs Gloria Degrandi-Hoffman and Judy Chen (summarized in
this month's ABJ) found that the feeding of protein to caged bees helped the
bees to suppress the reproduction of deformed wing virus. The necessity of
adequate protein for strong bee immunocompetence is a point which all
beekeepers should keep in mind!
