I use them on every hive. Think of it as the "attic" of a bee hive.
For me, it's a brood box that sits on top of the inner cover without any frames. The outer cover sits on top of it. My ekes hide my inverted buckets when I'm feeding and provides that upper space to keep the lower boxes cooler in the summer...like the attic on the house. I leave them on all year long.
I can't remember who gave it such a name but it is called an "eke."
