I have to apologize for getting nit-picky here, but we really need to avoid 
using the term "survival of the fittest". It is a tautology (after all, the 
way to determine "fitness" is based on who survives, so we have "survival 
of the survivors). Numerous people hear this and say "of course -- that's 
why evolution is bunk!". The correct term is "Natural Selection", and I 
think it can be useful to let people know that WE know that. But if we can 
get people to understand natural selection as a mechanism, I think we've 
gone a long way toward evolution education.

I saw a bumper sticker yesterday that read, "Honk if you understand 
punctuated equilibrium"!  Which raises the question of what it means to say 
that the public "understands" the mechanism of evolution.  Understand at 
what level?  Does "survival of the fittest" qualify, or would that indicate 
misunderstanding?
