At Beltsville several times I heard people say that the fact that the bees in Spain are not the same sub-species that other countries are using may be significant.
They use Apis m. iberiensis. A. m. iberiensis in southern Spain carries African mtDNA and may be influenced by Moroccan A. m. intermissa.
