I have had a bear get through an electric fence. (6 volt / half joule /
solar). The hives were strapped and they were rolled around but otherwise
did not suffer any damage. I assume something scare him off before he
started crushing hives.
I DO agree that a bear will crush strapped hives but if they are not
strapped a bear will tear all apart and although the wooden ware may be okay
you stand to loose all of the bees. If they are strapped they just don't
fall apart and although the wooden ware may be damaged some may survive.
It is a crap shoot on which is better.
Strapping IS NOT A SUBSTITUTE for an electric fence.
(Another example of 10 beekeepers in a room with 12 opinions....)
