I have observed hives suffering from this condition periodically over the past four years. In my situation, it happens when hives have mite problems at the same time as a pollen dearth. I have always assumed that it was virus-related, as I usually find a few bees emerging with DWV symptoms also. The hives recover when combined and/or are provided with improved nutrition.
