Linda,
I found this thread interesting. My unfinished master's research (mid
1980s) was on one of the colonial Yorktown wharfs. Some of my research
justification was that I was "bridging" my underwater and my terrestrial
archaeological backgrounds. While the transportation distance is significantly
different, I suspect that the shoreside infrastructure and construction
methods are probably similar. I would also think that it si almost imperative
that there has to be some sort of developed infrastructure on both the
sending and receiving ends of the ferry crossing. I'm inclined to agree with
Carl that there is probably little literature out there specifically on ferry
crossings. However, if you expand the research to include wharf/docks etc.
you might find a little more information. Which leads me to suggesting
inquiries toward the Texas A&M or East Carolina underwater programs. I
believe there have been other students at those institutions (or other underwater
programs) that have researched wharves, waterfronts, possibly ferries, or
similar topics.
