A colleague of mine who is into andirons thinks that what you have is a bracket, based on its size.  Hope this helps.

This item is an isolated surface find, without any solid archaeological context from a post-1870 historic site in the southwest US. It appears to be burned, and current thoughts were that perhaps it is a simple decorative bracket, or part of an andiron.
