Folks:
The Wisconsin Historical Society Maritime Preservation and Archaeology
Program has investigated a second shipwreck this summer, the Island City.
Built as a lake coastal schooner in 1859, After a 35 year career around
the western Great Lakes Island City sank in 1894 and now rests in 135 ft
of water at the bottom of Lake Michigan. Underwater Archaeologist Matt
Carter presents the first of three posts on this wreck. As with the
Walter B. Allen project Matt and the team recovered important information
during their survey. Today’s post presents a brief history of the vessel
and an interactive zoom-view image of the site that lets you dive down and
explore the Island City’s remains.
