We are starting our first hives. One of the hives has a small gap in the lid, and the bees are using that preferentially to the main entrance at the bottom, or at least as much. We had it plugged for a while, but they are back to finding a new way in at the top. The brood is good, and we have rotated the boxes. We live in interior Alaska, so got a late start.
It is getting time to add a honey super. Do we need to do something about the lid, or just let 'er rip and let them come and go as they wish? Many of the honey frames are bare, so we planned to wait a bit before adding the queen excluder.
