Hey Jennifer et al,

We've had several version of donation boxes over the past 40 years.

A clear container that allows people to see money is one of the strongest incentives, by probably a factor of 10-20X over all other donation boxes.

The negative control in our case was a large barrel with a small place for inserting money through the wooden lid.

It is important to seed the donation box with money

It is important to have only some money accessible and you may have to guard against robbery.

We have had donation devices that set off Tesla Coils, lighting up fluorescent tubes, something like Zeus with lightening bolts

We have had ring tosses. One idea never attempted would be launch a ring from one coil to another.

The Tesla coil and ring toss generated other triggering materials such as book marks, bit of paper, and small coins.

All in all, I would conclude from my rather informal history that the clear donation box makes the biggest difference. The interactive components added some attraction but also distracted people from giving in some ways.

We want to encourage philanthropic gifts of all sizes, make it interesting and possibly interactive, and also include a visual message about how much we have raised toward our annual fund goal. Does anyone have any information to share about successful (or not so successful) strategies?
