Much as I usually prefer REAL phenomena to simulations, for many, many
practical reasons I'd go for a video solution in this case. How about
filming the most spectacular Tesla coil sparks you can find, then projecting
the writhing lightening-forks onto one of those slow-motion cascading-cloud
'fogscreens' (e.g. www.fogscreen.com) with good stereo crackling
sound-effects. Make the effect intermittent, with pauses just long enough to
startle people when it suddenly begins again.
