The parent volume to "Surrounded by Science", mentioned in the Nature editorial as "The first attempt to integrate the findings from this research and to draw broad lessons from it was reported in a study released by the National Academies in January 2009", is entitled "Learning Science in Informal Environments: People, Places and Pursuits". There’s an editorial about informal science education in today’s edition of Nature.
<http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v464/n7290/full/464813b.html>
The editorial’s position: “Much of what people know about science is learned informally. Education policy-makers should take note.”
Among the topics that’s already stirring up some comments (online): to what extent is informal able to counter pseudoscience and misunderstandings about science? I hope our community will jump in and contribute!
Wendy
