Chris, the emerging field of epigenetics helps to explain how evolution can
happen much more quickly than by random mutation of alleles.
As Allen suggests, any "mixing of genes" (allelic recombinations) may
actually work against the mite's ability to rapidly evolve. Which is why
its brother/sister mating strategy is likely to its benefit.
