Yes, anti-histamine tablets are quite slow acting so taking them in advance
may be a good idea (if you like the idea of taking tablets).
I understand that applying topical anti-histamines can be a bad idea as they
can sensitize if used regularly (but don't ask me for a citation - might
well have been Harry Riches book, but I do not have time to look it up now,
or could have been one of his lectures that I attended).
