Jeff expounds further:
I should have given more information. . .I live in San Diego,
so freezing isn’t a problem, although we have had a *large* amount of
rain over the past two weeks. There was no water inside the hive
though. There was also a full honey super on top and plenty of stores
in the brood chambers (one deep and one shallow).
I have one hive that I believe is Africanized (very nasty) and I’ve
placed the full honey super complete with quite a few residual dead
bees on that hive as a test. I’m fully prepared to lose that hive as
well, which might provide some additional information.
I inspected all of my other hives, and besides a few that are showing
signs of mites (brood rearing is just starting up in earnest here)
everyone looks generally healthy.
