I put a hive in a neighbor's yard at her request, for a large garden she'd put in. They were there for a couple of years without incident until one day her husband called and asked me, "Why do your bees keep bothering me?" One had stung him and a couple others were were buzzing him, so I walked over to check it out.
Turns out he'd spent the afternoon distributing a large, months-old compost heap from the back driveway to the garden. It was a very hot day, and the last step was to take a large push broom and sweep the remaining compost right across the bees' flight path! That's when they decided they'd had enough.
I tried (unsuccessfully) to stifle my amusement as I explained to him that:
Sweat + Compost = Beestings
I think he understood, as there were no hard feelings.
