Conservative MEPs are keeping up the pressure in the European Parliament to
'save the bees'. This is not a trivial issue but one that is vital to our
ecological balance.
As part of the Conservative Save the Bee campaign, I will continue to fight
for a comprehensive bee health strategy that involves everyone from National
Governments to the European Institutions. If the downward trajectory of our
bee populations continues we could be in very serious trouble.
I am committed to ensuring Governments encourage sustainable, pollinator
friendly farming practices. In addition, the European Commission needs to
supply public data on the effects of pesticides and genetically modified
crops so we can make informed and accurate choices.
Pollinating by hand is hugely expensive and not always effective. We need to
leave it to the experts, bees are vital for this job.
Our resolution calls for continued funding, increases in research and a
greater pooling of knowledge among member states. Bees, after all, do not
recognise borders.
