Please excuse cross-postings!
The National Association for Research in Science Teaching (NARST) is currently accepting proposals for the next annual meeting in Orlando, FL (April 3-6, 2011). The deadline for proposals is August 15, 2010. We are writing to ask you to consider submitting a proposal to Strand 6: Science Learning in Informal Contexts. Strand 6 sessions focus on learning and teaching in museums, outdoor settings, community programs, communications media, and after-school programs.
Recent consensus studies, such as the NRC’s (2009) Learning Science in Informal Environments: People, Places, and Pursuits, and collaborative efforts, such as the NSF-funded Intersection Project workshop and Association of Science-Technology Centers (ASTC)-hosted web forums, point to an increasing interest in research and communication about learning science beyond the science classroom. For Strand 6 proposals, we look to see that the informal, free-choice, or everyday context/setting/environment is a key component, rather than an element or aspect that is “added-on” to the study. Proposals should clarify how the informal context is central to the research question or program being investigated and should build on existing literature.
We are particularly interested in proposals that address areas of overlap or intersection in research and practice, including informal science education (ISE) and the learning sciences, ISE and early childhood education, ISE and computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL), etc. By bringing ISE and other communities together, new theories and research methods can be brought to the fore to further what we know of science learning across the lifespan (e.g., preschoolers, school-aged youth, parents, educators, working adults, senior citizens) and that include learning processes, learning outcomes, and instructional strategies across contexts. If you have a project related to ISE and one of these or other areas, please do consider submitting a proposal for inclusion in a session addressing issues of overlap/intersection. Drop us a note to let us know your interest in being considered for this special session (email Sandra at [log in to unmask] or Anita at [log in to unmask])
Finally, please consider volunteering to be a reviewer for Strand 6. You can mark the appropriate box in your submission. Even if you are a co-author, or are unable to attend NARST this year, we’d truly appreciate your help. You can follow the Assessor Sign Up Directions (below) or send Sandra or Anita an email to let us know you would like to volunteer.
