I started out wiring with a wiring device that is about 100 years old. It
takes shallow and deep frames but it will only hold wooden spools, as you
old guys know wire used to come wooden spools. I am down to one wooden spool
of wire so I recently I have been designing a new device copying the old one
but modifying it to take plastic spools and all three sized frames. I embed
with a spur wire embedder.
I do like the crank handle on the old device and would like to find/make a
handle for my new one. I just turn the spool at this point to tighten the
wire but prefer a handle. I am saving my empty wooden spools and plan to put
new wire on them some day. I have had help making this new device because I
am not great at wood working.
I had been using support pins but they are expensive and I find in hot
weather if the foundation is not drawn out it warps terribly. So I switched
to wiring and do not get warped foundation any more. This device makes the
wiring go quickly and I hope my new one is around for 100 years as my old
one has been.
Here are some pictures.
