I used to do something similar in various cold shows: invert a CO2 tank and get a kid to hold some heavy black cloth over the nozzle while I cracked it open. Crumbly dry ice would be plainly visible on the cloth and could be put in coloured warm water for all the usual shenanigans.

We have a tank of compressed liquid CO2, and we dispense it into a small
vessel (~2" x 4" x 8") that is designed for the purpose. The reduction
of pressure causes it to cool and freeze (deposition) into the shape of
the container. The vessel is made of wood with a plastic liner. The
sides of the vessel snap together with a clasp, and separate easily once
the dry ice is formed inside. The top of the vessel has a special
fitting that connects to the CO2 tank. The resulting dry ice is softer
and more workable than that which we get at the grocery store. We use
this for a couple of different programs and the CO2 tank lasts quite a
while.

Many of us do activities and demos with dry ice. My question is: How
many of you have a dry ice machine on site? If so, where did you get
it? Is it worth it or do you find it easier/cheaper to go to the
grocery store as needed?
