I am very sorry to hear of Mr. Bergeron's death and my heart goes out
to his family and our colleagues dealing with such terrible news,
particularly at an otherwise joyous time of year celebrated by so many
families.

These types of terrible accidents happen in the USA also, I know for
certain they have occurred on academic digs where the "cowboys of
science" often ignore safety regulations and practices. It is
terribly unfortunate that awful events like Mr. Bergeron's death must
remind us of how serious the repercussions can be when one makes poor
or cavalier decisions.

Now is not the time to question Mr. Bergeron's situation, since nobody
has the information to make such judgements. It should force everyone
to reflect on our personal practices and those of the people we
supervise: students or staff or volunteers.

My sincere condolences to our Canadian friends,
Tim Scarlett
