Colleagues,
So far I'm learning a tremendous amount about Jew's Harps/Jaw Harps/Birimbaos and whatever other of the 1000+ names one wants to use. Probably more than I actually thought I wanted to know. I will be happy to provide a synopsis of the results when I'm pretty sure we've accomplished what we set out for. By the way, I've also really enjoyed the rabbit trails you've provided.
SO . . . if you would continue to respond, I'd appreciate it. And I am particularly interested in what "we" (i.e., you) know about historical names for the instrument in western and southwestern North America. Identifying an appropriate analytical name for the instrument does not relieve us of the need to know how the instrument was viewed and referred to historically.
