FYI,
Non-student volunteer slots are also usually available -- in Austin we had 
quite a few, in addition to the students, because there were avocational 
archaeologists who wanted to participate. The degree this happens may vary 
from year to year, but it's worth asking the committee chair if you want to 
attend a conference on this basis. I'd do it early, however. The slots go 
pretty fast, and most would be for students. But it's certainly possible to 
do this.
