Munsell Bead Color Book

The accurate determination of bead colors is an absolute necessity for
properly cataloguing beads and to facilitate comparisons of bead
assemblages and beaded artifacts. Until now, this has been hampered by a
lack of a widely available and relatively inexpensive color notation
system. Over the years, researchers have used various systems but the one
that has gained the widest acceptance is the *Munsell Book of Color*.
Unfortunately, its high cost (normally around $1,000) has prevented most
individuals and research organizations from obtaining and using it. To
rectify this situation, the Society of Bead Researcher’s officers worked
with Munsell Color, a division of X-Rite Pantone Inc., to create a bead
color book for the use of archaeologists, art historians, bead and beadwork
scholars, and others. This book, similar to the Munsell *Soil Color Book*,
offers a set of 176 colors from their line in a portable field guide. This
smaller guide offers a more affordable and portable alternative to the
massive *Munsell Book of Color*.

Munsell is preparing to go to press with this guide and hopes to have it
available by sometime in December. The cost is expected to be around $165
plus shipping. To get on a mailing list to be alerted when the *Munsell
Bead Color Book *is in print and ready for purchase, or for more
information, contact Theresa Domico

It is hoped that a sample copy will be available for examination at the
Society of Bead Researcher’s table in the book room at the Society for
Historical Archaeology meetings in Baltimore in January.
