Sorry for the late notice but next month on March 7-8, the Fiske Center for
Archaeological Research at UMass Boston will host an advanced introductory
workshop taught by Dr. Bruce Kaiser of Bruker AXS on handheld XRF analysis
of cultural heritage. This will be a free two-day workshop for anyone
interested in XRF analysis and using any manufacturer's analyzer.
These sessions will build on the topics of Bruce's well-known past workshops
See: <Workshop Overview <http://www.bruker-axs.com/workshop.html>>. Attendees
will review the basics of radiation physics as applied to the XRF analysis
of cultural heritage and receive safety training. Analyzers will be provided
for table groups of attendees to use at the workshop. Each attendee will
then be able to sign up to borrow a Bruker analyzer for a two week period
after the workshop at no cost or fee to continue his/her learning and
research.
Advanced topics in this workshop include a focus on quantification methods
and an expanded discussion of how XRF analysis fits in the context of
traditional methods of analysis and observation. Rather than just explaining
the limits of XRF when it comes to producing quantifiable readings of
cultural heritage, this workshop will address in detail how to generate the
best data for quantitation. Users of any manufacturer's analyzer will find
the workshop useful, however for users of Bruker Tracers Dr. Kaiser will
spend time specifically on how to use those analyzers with the quantitation
software developed for their Artax µ-XRF spectrometers.
This is a hands-on workshop and a great opportunity to learn how to carry
out specific research for a two week period following the workshop using a
loaner analyzer. We ask all attendees to think about research topics in the
elemental analysis of cultural heritage and, most importantly, to bring
analyzable samples to the workshop from which you and the other attendees
can learn.
Attendees should also bring a jump drive for the one gigabyte plus of
XRF related
data and research files that will accompany the sessions.
The workshop will take place at the UMass Boston campus in Boston,
Massachusetts. Please contact me at [log in to unmask] if you are
interested in attending this great opportunity.
