Special Lecture in Historical Archaeology at Oxford University

Professor Mark Leone (University of Maryland, College Park)
The Archaeology of Frederick Douglass

4pm, Tuesday 17 March 2009 (9th Week)
Garden Quad Auditorium, St John's College, Oxford

For over 40 years Mark Leone has been one of the leading archaeologists working on the
archaeology of the modern period. He has directed the Archaeology in Annapolis project
since 1981, and has written widely on historical archaeology, archaeological theory,
African American archaeology and the politics of archaeology. His most recent book, 'The
Archaeology of Liberty in an American Capital: Excavations in Annapolis' (University of
California Press), received the 2008 James Deetz Book Award.

The lecture will be followed by a wine reception.

The lecture forms part of a visit by Prof. Leone to Oxford supported by the University's
Astor Travel Fund, which provides funding to enable distinguished scholars and scientists
from the USA to visit the University to lecture and carry out research.
