We had a great solar train set (lots of great scenery, buildings, tunnels etc). Light was shone horizontally from left to right in front of the layout at a large solar cell, in such a way that people could block the light in various ways (filters etc.) The train layout was under Plexiglas. Very popular, quite robust. I confess however that we cheated a little - with a power amplifier between the solar cell output and the train.

Possibly the suntrain is relevant. Solar panels not only on the train
but on the rail ties. I don't know anything about how practical this
is for a real train, but it might make a great project.
