In all of the studies on essential oils that I have read, Thymol consistently tops the list of effectiveness. Thymol products have been used for thousands of years and are available now to use on bees. Limited short term use of thymol products have consistently reduced varroa populations. But there is a big difference between a strong antimicrobial substance like Thymol (closely related to Phenol) and a relatively benign substance like lemon grass, which is useful in perfumes and candy.
