The number of samples varies based on your question and what level of
accuracy required. It is completely a different kind of science. The
simple answer is:
1. l any number of hives below 25 all of them should be sampled
2. 26-50 hives sample 25-39
3. 50-100 hives sample 39-45
4. 101- 200 sample 45-51
5. 201-500 sample 51-56
6. >500 sample 56- 59
In this top case, you will treat all colonies based on sample results. If
you wish to treat individual colonies as per mite levels, you will need to
test each colony. You can also stratify your samples by focusing your
samples on high risk areas where you know a good neighbor. This neighbor
might be a good source of mites to your colonies.
