How does that differ from suffocation? My understanding is that the action of soffocation is the virtually the same as CO2, since the bees activity generates CO2 which knocks them out and kills them.
I suspect that suffocation is quicker and less traumatic than your other suggestions, and it is 'natural'.
Have you ever watched bees in alcohol? That is the only part of my sampling job that I hate.
