How does Round-Up effect bees?
Having visited rural areas abroad where no weedkillers are used I am
astounded at the contrast. We have fields of grass and nothing but grass; or an
arable crop with nothing but that crop: they have masses of wild flowers
and herbs in their meadows. Once wheat fields were commonly red with
poppies (no nectar but lots of blue pollen), but that's unusual now. They were
the obvious plants but there must have been many, many other flowers
providing forage for the bees and other insects of all sorts as well as the birds
and other predators that fed on them.
I have recently started keeping bees on the Isle of Portland where there is
little in the way of agriculture (but quite a bit of horsiculture, and
also the rare Portland sheep) and thus little chemical use. I have to take a
Flora with me to identify the diverse flowers that one treads on at every
step.
