Brazilian beekeepers have africanizaed bees, and do not treat them at
all to control varroa. The bees groom themselves asiduously, and
therefore keep varroa at bay.  Also the africanized bee brood emerge a
few hours earlier than european brood, shortening the varroa
reproduction cycle and therefore the number of emerging varroa.
The research group at the University of Sao Paulo (Ribeirao Preto
Campus),  (where Kerr had his original african bee stock) have done
research in Uruguay for several years to establish a correlation
between africanized  genes and resistance to varroa mites.
And it is clear that,  as you increase the european gene frequency in
the hybrids, you have more problems with varroa, and get more
dependent on chemicals to maintain control of the situation.
In Uruguay we have to control varroa, OR ELSE......
