Thanks, Wendy. I've long enjoyed this listserv, warts and all. Science is
fundamentally a cooperative search for truth, requiring free and open
communication, and I felt the listserv strove to reflect those ideals.
I will miss these conversations, but I just could not bring myself to click
"I AGREE" to the terms of the new forum, which seem over-the-top in
constraining and controlling user content. For example, the rule against
"challenging" others precludes genuine critical discussion of difficult or
controversial topics. The statement that ASTC may edit users' writings is
also troubling. And the stated expectation that users re-read the
terms-of-use each time they visit, in case any changes were made, is simply
unrealistic. (I do realize this is the "Beta", and the terms may become
more reasonable as the forum evolves.)
I've recently become very interested in the [apparent] growing dependence
of major American science museums on fossil fuel money, and its possible
link to the [apparent] dearth of serious climate change content in major
American science museums. A challenging topic, I would say, and I'd be
delighted to hear from anyone else interested in exploring it. (Or
anything about perception, as always.) In the meanwhile, I can now be
reached at <[log in to unmask]>.
Best to everyone,
