Scott,

I've never had an adult heckle me before, but I have had students be
so rude that I've stopped planetarium programs. In that case, I could
just ask them to be quiet or have their adults escort them out. You
didn't say whether or not their would be discussion after the film. It
might help if you could build in questions and answers at the end with
time for "rebuttals." Then, the audience could be asked to hold all
questions and comments to the end. Anyone violating the request during
the movie could be asked to leave. I know some people will say that we
shouldn't give more airtime to the Creationists, but if they're given
time at the very end, those people who don't want to listen to them talk
could just leave.

Subject: museum responses to the Evolution/Creationist debate

Dear Colleagues,

This coming Sunday is the 150th anniversary of Darwin's seminal
publication "On the Origin of Species". Our museum is going to be
showing the controversial, award-winning documentary film by entitled
"Flock of Dodos" by Randy Olson (2005).

The last time we had a similar event, we had one heckler (a Creationist)
in the audience.
The person eventually left on his own accord, but we (staff) were a
little shocked and unprepared.

I would like to be better prepared this time. Does anyone have any
suggestions, from personal experience, of how our staff can properly
respond to hecklers/trouble-makers at this sort of scientific program?

I have a feeling this subject has been broached on this listserver
before: I will search the archives. But if you would like to respond,
please do (please send responses to my persona email account). Thanks in
advance for any advice you can give.

Best wishes

Scott LaGreca
