We want to add reliable EHB/AHB discrimination to our system; but to do
this, we need data sets of really good recordings from the two races -
and we
need to know for sure that the EHB are truly EHB, the AHB are truly AHB -
i.e. Apis mellifera scutellata.
What race do you mean by EHB? There isn't a race that goes under the name
of European Honey Bee as there are several in this continent. Apis
mellifera mellifera, the 'black' bee is most widespread and hardy. A.m. Ligustica,
the Italian, has been widely exported and can form a very cross cross when
it meets A.m.m. A.m.Carnica from Slovenia is also widely exported;
A.m.Crecopia from Greece less so. A.m Iberica from Spain and Portugal aren't
heard of very much. Caucasian bees are sometimes fashionable, but I'm not sure
whether they come from Europe or from Asia and my atlas doesn't help. There
are also other less well-known races of European Honey Bee, all of which
have their own behavioural and morphometrical characteristics.
