plain old water works great - and easier to clean off people, rugs, pets,
etc.

one of the nicest ones i saw came from science museum of minnesota. had an
open tank and used a small burst of air to generate a wave point.

we also had someone how developed a prototype. just a shallow tank on top
of a overhead projector. we used a turkey baster to initiate the ripples.
one of the simplest, most elegant solution i ever saw. think he was playing
with a little hand operated cam device to initiate horizontal waves when he
retired or moved onto something else (hard to remember which!)
