Julia and others,
I'd like to make a plug for my own program, the Ph.D. in Cultural Studies at
UC Davis. It's close to the Bay Area, and it allows students to draw from
just about any discipline on campus. While my own work on informal learning
environments has become increasingly historical in nature, I began with a
more hands-on approach that asked larger questions about gender, informal
science learning, and the public understanding of science, and I could very
well have followed that track all the way to the Ph.D. Thanks to a local
science center, I've been able to apply much of the theory I've read to
exhibit design, label writing, classroom outreach, summer classes, and
program evaluation.
The downside to the Davis program is that there's no museum studies program
on campus, and it's been difficult for me to find faculty who work directly
with museums--although there are many working on issues that complement
museum studies very well. There are a number of people, for example, who
work on children's environments or on technoculture issues.
Julia, if you'd like, I can put you in touch with the director of the
program or other relevant faculty.
Good luck with your search!
Best,
Leslie Madsen-Brooks
