I have NEVER seen a crawling bee try to return to the hive.

In my earlier day, on cold spring days, I would collect the bees from the ground, warm them up in my hand until they started moving, place them on the landing board well inside the reduced entrance hole, and encourage them to go into the hive. To my surprise, 9 out of 10 times, you could not force the bees back into the hive.  I concluded a strong instinct was driving them out to die away from the hive.  This is how the hive remains vibrant by shedding its sick and dying bees.
