This is a real problem that beginners have: not knowing how often to look at the brood and not knowing what to look for. Even seasoned beekeepers don't seem to have the time or inclination to really scrutinize the brood on a regular basis. At minimum, beginners should look at the brood once a month during the season. How else will they know what is going on? Anyone who says this is too often, is giving out bad information. I don't believe opening the hives up is harmful, if done carefully, and could safely be done once a week.
