Thanks to everyone for the information provided about the button - it seems
it is very unusual and early in New Zealand, but although surprising to find
it here, it is not out of sync with the context in which it was found, and
provides for some extra interest in the site.  I can't get hold of any of
the references people supplied unfortunately, but thanks anyway.
