Biosecurity Queensland will begin combing large areas of land between Cairns
and Mareeba, in the state's far north, on the lookout for an exotic pest
bee.
Asian honeybees were discovered in Cairns last year, but were recently found
near Mareeba for the first time about a week ago.
Biosecurity Queensland spokeswoman Charlotte Greer says no more nests have
been found in Mareeba since then and biosecurity officers are still trying
to work out how the bees spread.
"They [may have] moved there themselves, so we are looking between Cairns
and Mareeba and the greater Tablelands as well for any signs [of them]," she
said.
"We're also looking at ... movement on trains, on trucks, on container sheds
- things like that that may have happened between Cairns and Mareeba."
