Hello David,
At The Tech Museum, we developed a working prototype for a wave tank buoy
that generates enough electricity to light a couple of high-zpower LEDs.
The device integrated the idea of those shake flashlights (magnet moving
through a coil of wire to generate electricity) into a miniature buoy (about
2in diameter).
We used larger magnets, finely wrapped coils, and a rectifying circuit, to
light a couple of high-power LED's from the slow 0.5-1Hz motion of a wave.
From there, you could have a put together table to have visitors build their
own shake generator by swapping out magnets, coils, etc... (well, maybe not
untethered magnets...)
