An upcoming issue of the Journal of Invertebrate Pathology will focus on honey bee disease. Here are some excerpts from a summary on varroa control:
====
I couldn't help but notice that of the 8 examples of varroa control given, there are 5 artificial controls (that a beekeeper must implement), 2 controls that can occure naturally. But no mention of any trait mechanisms / breeding for varroa control. Will they be reporting on the mechanisms for varroa control found in traits? A focus on bee disease and controls without any consideration towards the value of resistance mechanisms found in traits, would be distressing, at least for myself.
> Use of wire netting bottom boards:
(an open void below the nest can also occur naturally)
> Reduced cell size:
(can occur naturally)
Best Wishes,
Joe
