I agree! It used to be "THE" place to get all kinds of local info (cic). In particular, it was also the most accessible place to get health information (doctor's not withstanding). Incidentally, when I worked in Mexico, the doctor would write a prescription for an injection, and the pharmacist would give you the shot!

>I second the idea about the history of pharmacies through the ages. The pharmacy as an institution in the U.S. is so interesting and has undergone so many changes in the past century. Growing up in the Midwest, up until 15 years ago, the pharmacy was the place we would go not only for Tylenol or prescription medicine, but also for tonics, malted milk shakes, lunch, local news and gossip, etc. The local pharmacy played a very important role in the community.

> Having grown up in the 1940s & '50s in a pharmacy, I'm struck by how different today's pharmacies are, and by how little the differences are recognized. So my suggestion would be to try to contrast pharmacies of, say, 2000. 1950, 1900, 1850, 1750, 1600, 500... These differences might be conveyed with
> - pharmacopeas
> - equipment (balances, scales, mortars/pestles, pill & tablet making tablets) Users might do hands-on activities
> - practices of dispensing: (making tinctures, counting out pills/slapping labels on bottles of pills) More hands-on Also a timeline suggesting innovations: herbal medicine; early "scientific" phase; sulfa drugs, antibiotics; antibiotic resistance...
