Hi Cricket,

It really depends on what you'll be moving and how far you'll be moving it.

That being said, I'm a big fan of hand-cranked conveyor belts (with slip-clutch handles) as they are less likely to be used as de facto pieces of playground equipment.

Robust and safe units made with off-the-shelf material handling supplies can be built fairly easily.

Also, there were some nicely-designed hand-cranked horizontal conveyors in OMSI's BusyTown exhibition, OMSI's Exhibit Services group may be able to sell you a version.
