I've had all kinds of steel springs made by specialist spring manufacturers,
simply by walking into their factory. You do have to tell them exactly what
you want though: e.g. 'extension spring', dimensions, force required etc.
They simply set up one of their machines with these numbers and feed in a
length of suitable wire. The spring comes spiralling out from the other end
of the machine in a way that is quite amazing to watch.
