hey aimee, i worked with explora on the large gears....
they were made of 1/2" delrin and were cut by a company that specializes in
gears...5 different sizes, from 1.5" to about 10".
Biggest problem we ran into, (and the reason base had to be modified) was
due to the magnets.....the orginal surface was slanted, like a drawing
table. however, magnets strong enough to hold the biggest gears were too so
strong that a finger could get pinched between two spinning gears. When we
used lesser magnets, didn't hold the big gears secure enough.
going to the flat surface made a big difference and the exhibit works pretty
well now.
