I have tried both a pressure washer and the long end of a hive tool in plunging motion on a cool/cold morning.  I prefer the second method by a wide margin.  The hive tool cuts the cells cleanly at the midrib height.  I feel there is very little residue left in the embossed cells and it may encourage acceptance.  I'll find out this spring.

If the cells in the upper corners of the frames have light wax (not used for brood rearing), I leave them intact so the bees have something to work with.
