One should have at least one empty super on your hives during the honey season.  If bees feel they don't have enough space to store it, they will bring in less nectar.

This may require a little adjustment in the earliest spring, if the hive is weak and the added cold head room might cause it to build up slower.  Even then, you can reduce the front entrance and the top vent hole.
